Remembering Idris Phillips

Idris Phillips
January 1958 – July 2022

Eight Years Old

That open pain,
That you looked through,
Let in the storm of life that blew
All your notes upon the ground –
Took out the lights and killed the sound.
But your time has come around.

Now there’s a young woman and a young man,
Who fell hard while you were seeking truth.
Kisses good-bye, you kissed the sky and you kissed away their youth.
Some sick or sacred plan,
For a young woman and young man.

Time seems cold, each day we grey away.
Believe the lies that we’ve been told, “Lose our way lose yesterday.”
They say, but who are they?
Who are they anyway?
They didn’t hear us play at eight years old.

A treasure map you didn’t lose.
The lines to follow if we choose.
Stand now to take the bow, we may be so surprised to learn,
There’s one bridge you didn’t burn.

Time seems cold, each day we grey and fray.
Believe the lies that we’ve been told, “Lose our way lose yesterday.”
They say, but who are they?
Who are they anyway?
They didn’t hear us play at eight years old.

We’re eight years old.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajioon. So very sorry to hear of this news about your dear friend. May Allah swt expand his grave, forgive his deficiencies, accept his deeds and raise him to Jannat-ul-Ferdous.

  4. From God we have come and to God we are ever returning. We were blessed to see Idris Phillips play alongside you at your homecoming concert in Waterloo. We loved the music so much we bought your album and his. We still play them in our car often. God forgive him his sins and grant him a high place in the Garden.

  5. I am deeply sorry for your loss. The album you and Idris did together has always been an inspiration for me. He will be remembered. May God embrace him with His everlasting, loving mercy.

  6. Very sorry to hear about Idaris – I remember meeting him once – maybe a couple of times back when Yahya first met you.

  7. I did remember your song with him ‘Out Seeing the Fields’๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ™Œ

  8. Dear Dawud and everyone who knew Idris, our thoughts are with you at this difficult time. Dawud, thank you for introducing Idris to the UK, we would never have had the privilege to meet him and benefit from his company otherwise. Naved and I were just remembering time with you both and he remembers most fondly driving you guys round in a transit van! The world has lost a true humble gentleman. From Him we are born, to Him we return.
